Can We Choose Against Our Strongest Desire?
Christians often speak of “free will” as the power to choose between options equally. Scripture however, consistently locates the will within the moral state of the heart— and teaches that desire and inclination always determine action.
Jesus does not say, “The neutral will comes to Me.” He says, “No one CAN come unless the Father draws him” (John 6:44). Paul likewise grounds salvation not in human decision but in God’s gift: “It is not of yourselves” (Eph 2:8–9).
The question is not whether the will chooses—it always does. The question is: what does the heart desire at the moment of choice?
